Dark blue Mahindra XEV 9S, a three row electric SUV

The XEV 9S spec sheet is simpler than a petrol SUV's. There is no engine, gearbox choice or fuel tank, so the numbers that matter are battery size, range, charging time and seats. Three batteries and two seat layouts cover every version.

Power comes from a single motor on the rear axle with a single speed automatic. The 59 kWh version makes 170 kW, or 228 bhp. The 70 kWh makes 180 kW (241 bhp) and the 79 kWh makes 210 kW (282 bhp). Torque is 380 Nm on all three, and it arrives the moment you press the pedal.

Range follows the battery: 521 km, 600 km and 679 km on Mahindra's MIDC figures. DC fast charging from 20 to 80 percent takes about 20 minutes on a 140, 160 or 180 kW charger. At home, an 11.2 kW wallbox charges the three batteries from empty in about 6, 7 and 8 hours. A 7.2 kW unit takes 8.7, 10.2 and 11.7 hours.

The body is 4,737 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,747 mm tall on a 2,762 mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is 205 mm, or 222 mm under the battery. The rear uses a five link independent setup, and there are disc brakes at all four wheels. Packs Three and Three Above add adaptive dampers that adjust the ride as you drive. Look through the XEV 9S trims to see where each feature starts.

All versions ride on 235/60 R18 tyres, with alloy wheels from Pack Two Above. Safety starts at six airbags, ESP and a tyre pressure monitor for each wheel, and the top two packs add a driver knee airbag for seven. Browse the six XEV 9S colours once you have a pack in mind.
